Pacific Ocean's oxygen loss follows two opposite patterns

Climate change is reducing ocean oxygen unevenly across the Pacific. Subtropical gyres are aging and losing oxygen, while tropical zones are becoming younger with less deoxygenation. Researchers used ocean circulation models to reveal this paradoxical 'young get older, old get younger' response driven by Southern Ocean warming and Kelvin waves.

This 'young get older, but old get younger' pattern in the tropical and subtropical North Pacific is consistently simulated across CMIP6 models under strong radiative forcing.
