'This Is Anfield' sign sells for £115,000 at auction

The original 'This Is Anfield' sign from Liverpool's stadium tunnel sold for £115,000, nearly eight times its £15,000 guide price. Bill Shankly chose the words in 1972 to intimidate opposition players. The sign was removed in the 1970s and displayed in an Isle of Man hotel for over 20 years before auction. Final price including commission reached £149,500, a UK sports stadium interior sign record.

Shankly wanted any opposition player passing beneath the sign to know they were 'going into a cauldron and they weren't going to come out with a win'.
